Sonia Sabri Company

Sonia Sabri Company (SSCo) is an internationally acclaimed dance company which has established a reputation for presenting high quality Kathak in a contemporary context.

SSCo creates ambitious work that speaks to modern audiences, inspired by British and Indian culture, and the rich possibilities that arise when they meet. SSCo defines its work into three main strands: classical, contemporary and urban.

SSCo broadens and challenges the perception of Kathak and the creative possibilities through its distinct collaborative approaches.
Some of these projects include working with a range of artists from Richard Alston, Jonzi D, Fillip van Huffel, Rose English, Nitin Sawhney to others from pop, beatbox, slam poetry, jazz, calligraphy, digital, theatre and more.

SSCo is renowned for creating and presenting work in bold new ways for theatres, festivals, outdoors, unusual spaces, immersive theatres and cinema.
Music lies at the heart of the work and Sonia Sabri Company is one of the very few British dance companies that collaborate with Live music on nearly all its productions.

In addition to touring and responding to commissions, SSCo delivers an extensive education & training programme.

Sonia Sabri Company is an associate company at Birmingham’s mac and regularly performs at London’s South Bank Centre.

Ekalya

A modern classical celebration of Persian and Indian artistry expressed through the intricate language of Kathak.

Ekalya (from the Sanskrit meaning ‘solo’) is a beautifully intimate crafting of dance and live music. The captivating Sonia Sabri explores the roots of Kathak and presents a striking display of both the skilled and dramatic aspects of the artform.

Specially for BDE 2014, Sonia Sabri Company performs excerpts of the originally two-part production focussing on the technical virtuosity of the artists, and highlighting the interplay between movement and rhythm.

Ekalya gives a glimpse of the classical strand of the company’s work. We are happy to discuss this work further and/or about our other strands we present.
